Darksky Starparty January 14th 2005

Well we had a couple of groups at two different locations that night.

Paul Winn, Joe Doyle & Jeremy Schmit went and found a nice location about a mile below the Ranger Station on Figueroa Mountain Rd.
We had very nice viewing with incredible skies.
By midnight the seeing and transparency were perfect.

The comet (Machholtz) was visible with the unaided eye and when Saturn was up high enough you could see both the Cassini & the Crape Ring. We where able to count 6 of Saturn's moons in Joe's 18.5" scope.

Paul was up there testing out his new Canon Digital Rebel and took some very nice photos, not bad for the first time out.
See his website at www.stargazing1.com

Jeremy Schmit had his New 10" Home Made Dobsonian Telescope in dark skies for the first time. What a very nice job he did on the craftsmanship of the scope. He even ground the mirror himself! The star testing of the scope showed that he knows what he is doing!

Of course Joy Doyle had his 18" Dobsonian. All I can saw is WOW. That scope of his is something to look through.

Then there was the group that went to Refugio State Beach. Refugio was quite nice, too, especially since there were no trains and the rangers had closed everything down. Chuck, Pat , Art Harris, Craig Prater, Tim Crawford and Tim Wittenburg made it to Refugio for the night.
